FAQs

When do you meet?

We meet at 6PM Tuesdays and Thursdays at Surprise Beach near the Vancouver Waterfront. Boards are in the water by 6:15. Check our facebook page for cancellations due to weather

Is there a fee to join?

Nope!

What should I bring?

For starters, you'll need to bring your own stand-up paddleboard, kayak, or something else that you can paddle, a life vest, and a whistle (PFDs and whistles are required on the Columbia River by both Oregon and Washington law). We also recommend sun protection and a water bottle. Depending on the temperature and your personal preference, you may consider a wetsuit

Is there parking?

Free parking is available on the streets near surprise beach. Please observe the no parking signs in the streets nearby the townhomes

What is it like to paddle on the Columbia?

Paddling on the Columbia River is peaceful, scenic, and occasionally challenging. You'll be treated to views of Mt. Hood, the I-5 bridge, and the downtown Vancouver skyline. Conditions vary with wind, current, and boat traffic—some evenings are glassy and calm, while others can be breezy and choppy. Participants are free to organize and chose their own route

Do I need experience to join?

Nope! Beginners are welcome. Just make sure you’re comfortable in the water and have the required safety gear. If it’s your first time on a board or kayak, we recommend arriving a bit early and sticking close to the shore.

Can I bring my dog/friend?

Absolutely! As long as they have proper safety gear and you feel confident paddling with them, bring them along. We love seeing pups out on the water with us.

Do I have to be a certain age to participate?

VPC is Adults 18+ only

How long do you paddle?

Most group paddles last around 60 minutes, but you're welcome to head back early or stay out longer. It's casual and flexible—just let someone know if you're heading back on your own.

Do you paddle year-round?

We typically paddle from late spring through early fall, depending on daylight and river conditions.
